What is Generic Apple Pencil
A stylus pen (touch pen) for iPad that can be used as an alternative to Apple Pencil and is sold at a low price of about $21 is called "Generic Apple Pencil". It has been around for several years and is popular because it is cheap and easy to use.
However, there were also disadvantages due to compatible products, such as "cannot double tap on the side" and "no writing pressure detection function (with tilt detection)". What was particularly inconvenient was that wireless charging was not possible, and you had to connect the cord directly to charge.
However, recently, I learned that a product that supports wireless charging has finally appeared, so I bought it. That is the GOOJODOQ GD13.
Unpacking and appearance check
Includes pen body, replacement nib, case, and instruction manual (English). Many of these products are unbranded, but this product has a solid logo. GOOJODOQ stands for "GOOD JOB DO QUICKLY".
Comparing the GD13 pen body (top) with the genuine 2nd generation Apple Pencil (bottom), they are quite similar. The length is almost the same, and the pen tip (tip) is also compatible with the genuine Apple Pencil. While the genuine material is matte, the GD13 is glossy.
Since the direction of the logo is different from the genuine one, the logo will be reversed when you hold it. It also has a power button and indicator on the back. The old model stood out a little because it had a USB Type-C port for charging, but this product is even harder to distinguish.
Usage
The old model was used without any connection, but this product can be connected to Bluetooth. If Apple Pencil is connected, disconnect it and tap the power button on the back of GD13. When the indicator lights up, you can connect by selecting "GD13 pencil" on the iPad's Bluetooth screen.
If you look at the widget on the home screen, it will be recognized as an Apple Pencil and you can check the battery level . Furthermore, when I attached it to the side of the iPad with a magnet, I was able to really charge it wirelessly . The widget will also show that it is charging. I'm amazed at how compatible this is.
However, if it is genuine, the remaining battery level will be displayed at the top of the screen when it is attached, but that is not the case with the GD13.
However, the battery doesn't drain so fast that I need to check it frequently, so I don't mind just checking it with the widget when I need it. Since the indicator flashes while charging, you can check whether it is charging without looking at the widget.
writing comfort
You can write as it is when you separate it from the side of the iPad. When I actually wrote it, it was as smooth as the old model. Almost no delay . That should be because it seems that the same technology as the genuine Apple Pencil is used. I don't feel any difference compared to the original.
Palm rejection makes it safe to touch most apps. There is a tilt detection function, so it becomes thicker when tilted, but there is no pen pressure detection function. I don't think it's necessary unless you're writing a full-fledged illustration.
In addition, the battery is claimed to last 15-20 hours. When I continued writing for 5 minutes, the battery level decreased by 1 point. Actually, I don't keep writing all the time, but there should be time to hold it in my hand, so it can be said that it has enough battery.
Other functions
When I tried the function that launches the memo app by tapping the iPad screen with a pen during sleep, it was not supported. After waking from sleep, tap the lock screen to activate. In addition, it does not correspond to function assignment with double tap on the side.
It supports scribble (character recognition) and the ability to assign actions by swiping from the lower left and lower right corners . Even if it is not genuine, the item "Apple Pencil" is displayed on the setting screen, so you can set it there.
Drawbacks and solutions
When GD13 is connected, the software keyboard may not appear on the text input screen. Apparently GD13 seems to have been recognized as an external keyboard. Once you tap "Show software keyboard", it will be displayed, but it is troublesome to do it every time.
I couldn't find it in other review articles or videos, so it may be a phenomenon only for me, but the solution to this is to use it without Bluetooth connection. Even if you don't connect it, you can use it normally by turning on the power of the pen, and you can also charge it on the side of the iPad .
It's just that you can't check the remaining battery level in the widget. You don't have to keep writing until the battery runs out and you should charge it when you don't use it, so you don't have to worry about not being able to check the exact remaining battery level.
I feel like I haven't been able to take full advantage of all the functions, but for the time being I can use it comfortably. In the case of a floating keyboard, there is no problem because it is always displayed even when an external keyboard is connected. It would have been nice if there was a setting to always display both the normal software keyboard and the external keyboard, but it seems that there is no such setting.
Another drawback is that the rear indicator always lights up when in use. Even if you press and hold the power button to turn off the power, when you attach it to the side, charging will automatically start and the indicator will blink.
In addition, the pen body becomes hot after charging. It's not that I can't have it, but I'm worried because it doesn't happen with genuine.
Overall review
There is almost no difference between the writing itself and the genuine one, and it can be written very smoothly. It's a pity that you can't check the battery level with the widget if you don't connect to Bluetooth due to the keyboard problem, but it's very convenient to be able to charge wirelessly on the side of the iPad . Although there are some functions that are not supported, most people have the impression that they can use this product comfortably without much change even if they choose this product instead of the genuine product. The advantage of being able to charge wirelessly is very great, so if you buy a generic Apple Pencil in the future, this is the only choice. Prices are almost the same.
It cannot be used with iPads that cannot be charged from the side (unmarked or older generations), so in that case the older model seems to be good.
