OWNDAYS × HUAWEI Eyewear review. Audio glasses that will change your life!

　Audio glasses, a gadget that looks like a combination of glasses and earphones. I purchased “OWNDAYS × HUAWEI Eyewear”, a collaboration product between the eyewear chain OWNDAYS and Huawei, which was released on June 3rd last year. I've been using it for about 11 months, so I'm writing a review.

History of purchase

　I'm not good with earphones, so I used headphones, but they were big and difficult to carry around, and they were troublesome to put in and take out. Since I have always worn glasses, I thought that buying audio glasses would save me a lot of trouble.

　I couldn't decide between Anker Soundcore Frames and HUAWEI Eyewear, which were released at the same time. I chose Huawei because it takes time and money to bring it to the company and have the lens replaced (and at my own risk), and it doesn't support multi-connection. There are currently three types of HUAWEI Eyewear.

　The last two have just been released. And since OWNDAYS collaboration items are sold at eyeglass stores, they can be made into prescription lenses for free . The price is the same as regular HUAWEI Eyewear. Therefore, I chose the OWNDAYS collaboration, which is a good deal if you want prescription lenses.

　We will look at the appearance. Conventional audio glasses have a very thick frame that feels strange, but this product is so thin.

　It is certainly large overall and may not fit in a normal eyeglass case. However, when you put them on, they are surprisingly natural and look like ordinary glasses . Neither my acquaintances nor my family noticed the change in glasses, and even when I told them about it, they didn't point out the thickness of the frame.

　Although it is made of plastic, it does not have a luxurious feel, but thanks to that, it has achieved a light weight of 43g. Although it is heavier than normal glasses, you don't have to worry about the weight even if you wear it.

　If you look closely, there are multiple speakers and microphones at the bottom and top of the frame. Inside the frame are the “HUAWEI” and “OWANDAYS” logos. In addition, one point that shines silver on the front left and right edges.

　The frame and lens part can be removed. The frame seems to be almost the same as regular HUAWEI Eyewear. When you wash the lenses, you don't have to remove them as long as you don't get too much water on the frame. In addition, it supports IPX4 water resistance , so you can use it without worrying about a little rain.

　The nose pad has an adjustable nose pad. It would have been better if the nose pad was fixed because it was easy to get dirty and fragile, but so far there is no problem at all.

　This time I chose the SQUARE type. The lens is large. There is also a larger WELLINGTON type. HUAWEI Eyewear, which is not a collaboration with OWNDAYS, has a slightly smaller lens, so if you prefer something closer to regular glasses, that might be better. At first, I thought it was too big, but once I got used to it, I didn't think anything of it.

　The case has the OWNDAYS logo, but it seems to be made by Huawei, not the original. Regular HUAWEI Eyewear comes with the same one with the Huawei logo. I am a little worried about the protection performance because I can not close it completely.

　Although I didn't buy it, there is also a dedicated SNAP LENS (1,650 yen including tax) that can be easily attached to sunglasses with a magnet.

sense of use

　When you actually listen to it, you will be surrounded by music with a mysterious feeling that you have never experienced before . Sounds come from all directions, like 360-degree stereophony, so at first you may feel uneasy that they are coming from the speakers.

　Before trying it out, I was worried that I could hear the sound just by having the speaker close to my ear, or that it would be drowned out by the surrounding sounds, but that's not the case at all and I can hear clearly . The volume is surprisingly loud. It is possible to enjoy music in earnest in a quiet environment. As expected, you can only hear it faintly on busy roads, but if you're on a quiet road or inside a store, there's no problem.

　This time, I'm worried that others may hear it, but Huawei's unique technology such as reverse sound waves and structure has suppressed sound leakage considerably.

　In fact, I used it near my friend and asked him to use it, but I can't hear it unless I'm very close.

　Of course, if you raise the volume, the sound will leak, but in that case, the volume is too loud for the person himself. Even if there are people sitting next to you at a certain distance , you don't have to worry about sound leakage . You don't have to worry at all when you're in a store or walking down the street.

　The sound quality is better than expected, and the bass is also out and powerful. The resolution is of course inferior to earphones and headphones, but it is clear enough to enjoy music.

　It also has a noise-cancelling microphone for calls and web conferencing. In fact, I use it quite often with Zoom and LINE, and I can hear the other person's voice clearly . The mic quality feels a little muffled, but it doesn't interfere with calls.

　Latency isn't a problem when watching videos, but it's annoying when playing games. I don't think it's suitable for music games, but in FPS games it's easy to tell the direction of the gunshots and it's very realistic. I'm not a serious person, and it's troublesome to prepare headphones when playing games, so I use them as they are.

Convenient function

　There is no physical power button, and it is equipped with a wear detection function and will automatically connect to the device when you put it on after pairing. Playback stops automatically when you remove the glasses, and resumes automatically when you put them back on. As it becomes the speaker output automatically while I take it off, it is very convenient. If you don't wear it for a while, it will go to sleep, and if you put it on again, it will be recognized immediately.

　The outer part of the frame is a touch sensor, so you can easily operate it like an earphone. You can customize it from the HUAWEI AI Life app and assign different functions to the left and right. Response accuracy is good, but it may be difficult if you have long hair over the frame.

• When receiving an incoming call, double tap to answer/end, long press to reject

　And it supports multipoint connection ! Dual connection (simultaneous connection of 2 devices) is possible, so there is no need to reconnect when you are watching a video on a tablet and receive a call on your smartphone. It will switch automatically. Even with 3 or more devices, once paired, you can connect by simply operating from the Bluetooth settings on the device side. You can also switch the connected device from the Connection Center of the HUAWEI AI Life app for Android and Harmony OS.

　As far as I have researched, there seems to be no other audio glasses that support multipoint connections other than HUAWEI Eyewear. I think that it is absolutely necessary because it is a device that you want to use immediately anytime.

Exploding QOL

　Since they are eyeglasses, they are naturally the most comfortable to wear as an audio device. Even if you use it for a long time, you will not get tired.

　Unlike earphones and headphones, there is no "feeling of wearing a device" from a third party's point of view , and web conferencing can be conducted naturally. I thought that it would be troublesome to put on the earphones and it would look weird, but the speaker would be howling, so this is really helpful. Furthermore, when walking outside or checking out at the cash register, wearing earphones makes the other person feel uneasy and uncomfortable, thinking, "I wonder if this person can hear me...". But with audio glasses, you don't have to worry. Moreover, you can actually have a conversation without any problem even if you are listening to music.

　The best part is that you can spend your time wearing earphones all the time, and you can listen to them whenever you want . If you want to listen to music while walking or shopping, unlike earphones that require you to put on and take off with both hands, you can listen to music immediately by operating your smartphone with one hand. Join the meeting instantly. There is no risk of dropping the earphones. It can be used literally anytime, so it may be perfect for those who use voice assistants.

　Also, there may be times when you don't want to be heard by your family, or you don't want to use the speakers too much because you are renting and are considerate of your neighbors. But I don't like wearing earphones all the time at home. Even in such cases, audio glasses allow you to comfortably listen to music and videos without being heard by others while maintaining your own convenience. In fact, the author is very saved, and I can easily listen to music even when doing housework.

battery

　Charging is done by attaching the attached dedicated magnetic charger to the back of both frames. Sales of chargers alone have also started in July. Since it is USB Type-C, it is convenient to use the charging cable of the smartphone as it is. It takes approximately 85 minutes to fully charge.

　When using audio glasses, I think that the point of concern, especially for a person like me who used to wear glasses, is, "Can I wear them all day long like normal glasses?" As long as you charge it frequently, you can always wear it .

　Continuous music playback is claimed to be approximately 6 hours, and continuous talk time is approximately 4.5 hours. It will notify you with a sound when the remaining 20% ​​or 10%. As audio glasses, they're long enough to be used exclusively for web conferencing, but if you wear them all the time to listen to music or talk on the phone, you won't feel comfortable.

　I frequently charge the battery while taking a bath or taking a nap, but there are times when the battery still does not last. In that case, you can't live without wearing glasses for your eyesight, so it's safer to have spare normal glasses to use while charging. Also, as a last resort, you can use it while charging, but I recommend it only when you are alone because the cable is stretched behind your head.

summary

　There are no particular drawbacks, and to say the least, it is not compatible with Mac. It will try to connect many times even after the Mac sleeps, so you need to disconnect it well before putting it to sleep.

　It seems that this product can also be purchased at the OWNDAYS online store, but I went directly to the store (available only at some stores). After selecting a model, you will be asked if you want to add degrees. If you say put a degree, it's a normal visual acuity measurement. After completing the membership registration and accounting, it was completed in about an hour. After that, I opened it and received an explanation, so the total required time is less than 2 hours.

　If this is not sold at OWNDAYS, I would have to bring it to an optician and pay a few thousand yen to have it replaced with a prescription lens, so I felt that selling it at an optician was the right answer . Thank you. Moreover, the eyewear store should be able to design only the front lens part, so we can expect collaborations with more eyeglass brands.

I am very satisfied　with the fact that "I can listen to music and videos anytime" and "I don't get tired even after using it for a long time" . It fits my life very well and I'm really glad I bought it. Multi-point connection is also so convenient that it is hard to imagine that it is not supported.
