Unpacking and appearance check
We will open it. Items other than the main unit are as follows.
- Instructions
- clear case
- SIM pin
I'm a little surprised that it doesn't even come with an AC adapter or USB-Type-C cable. The box itself is pretty slim. OPPO Reno5 A body. I chose ice blue. The Reno3 A also had a blue color, but I think it's a good color that is easy to choose for both men and women. I personally like it because it has a refreshing impression and is hard to wear with people.
The side has a volume button and power button, and the bottom has an earphone jack, Type-C connector, microphone, and speaker.
What surprised me was how beautifully the borders of the metal frame were processed . In most of these low-end smartphones, there is a step between the side frame and the display surface, which makes it feel a little cheap. I was impressed that the Reno5 A handled such borders properly and didn't cut corners on the details.
The body size is 162mm in height, 75mm in width, 8.2mm in thickness, and 182g in weight. It has a 6.5-inch FHD+ (1080 x 2400 dots) liquid crystal display. The previous model Reno3 A used an organic EL display, but it seems to have been downgraded. However, the color development is very good, and the display quality is not a concern at all.
It's not too small, it's not too big, and the thickness is kept to a minimum, so it's a nice size. One-handed operation is barely possible by devising the holding position.
Reno5 A supports dual SIM. A microSD card can also be used, but in that case a second SIM card cannot be used. It also supports eSIM. The Ymobile version is a single SIM specification that does not support eSIM.
Performance
"Snapdragon 765G" is adopted for the SoC of OPPO Reno5 A. It has the same SoC as the Pixel 5. I measured the score with two apps, Antutu Benchmark and GeekBench.
Antutu Benchmark v9
As a result of 384,254 points . If you have about 300,000 points, it will be enough because it is an impression that you will not be dissatisfied in daily use.
GeekBench 5.4.1
The result of GeekBenchmark is 604 for single core and 1731 for multicore.
About operation and game performance
The Antutu benchmark score is about 380,000, so basically I have nothing to complain about. Launching and switching apps, scrolling, etc. are very smooth. The previous model Reno3 A had a feeling of being stuck and sluggish, but it has been improved considerably.
With a refresh rate of 90Hz and a touch sampling rate of 180Hz , it's perfect for gaming. "Crash Royale" and "Uma Musume" that I usually play work crisply. Response is also very brisk and there is no dissatisfaction.
With Genshin Impact, the frame rate is about 40-45 fps when playing on medium settings. Looking for comfort means lowering the image quality setting even further. If you're looking for a smartphone that's reasonably priced and comfortable enough to play, the Reno5 A might be perfect for you. If you are unsatisfactory, choose a high-end terminal.
camera
OPPO Reno5 A adopts a quad camera. The camera configuration is as follows.
- Wide angle: 64 million pixels F1.7
- Super wide angle: 8 million pixels F2.2
- Monochrome: 2 million pixels F2.4
- Macro: 2 million pixels F2.4
Here are some actual examples.
wide angle
The Reno5 A does not have a telephoto lens, so it will be a digital zoom. You can always use up to 2x, but 5x is a little tough. The noise is quite noticeable, so it's weak for low-light shooting, but otherwise you can shoot beautifully.
Ultra wide-angle/portrait
As for the ultra-wide angle, the impression is quite rough. It's still better on a small screen like a smartphone, but when it's displayed on a PC, it feels like... The zoom and ultra-wide-angle cameras are disappointing, but a wide-angle camera can take clear pictures, so considering the list price of about $285, I feel that the camera performance is excellent enough.
biometric authentication
OPPO Reno5 A has a fingerprint sensor on the back. When you pick up your smartphone, there is a sensor where your index finger naturally hits, so you can authenticate quickly.
I have no complaints about accuracy or speed. However, when you put it on a desk, you have to turn it over, so it might be better to have a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor on the front or in the screen.
with battery
OPPO Reno5 A will have a 4000mAh battery. I tried using it for a day when it was set to 90Hz, but it's fine for SNS, browsing, and smartphone gaming for about 1-2 hours. When I checked at night, it was about 25% left. The charging speed is 18W, so it's not that fast, but you can charge it from 0% to 100% in a little over 2 hours.
Waterproof and dustproof, equipped with FeliCa
Without this function, it cannot be used as a main smartphone! Many people say that waterproof and dustproof and FeliCa. OPPO Reno5 A has IPX8 / IP6X waterproof and dustproof performance, and it also supports Osaifu-Keitai. The position of FeliCa is also on the top, so it does not interfere even if you wear a smartphone stand / ring. It is convenient to complete shopping with just a smartphone if it is about shopping nearby.
compared to the previous model
I used to own and use Reno3 A, the previous model of OPPO Reno5 A. The Reno3 A was also a smartphone equipped with FeliCa, water and dust resistance, a 4-lens camera, and a large-capacity battery, but it did not have a very good image because of its poor SoC . I really liked the camera and the look.
Even switching between apps and scrolling was a bit stuttering, so it's quite difficult for a smartphone for everyday use . It made me realize that SoC should not be compromised. Compared to the Reno3 A, which was clumsy in addition and subtraction, I have the impression that the Reno5 A has a clear understanding of what needs to be cut.
Disadvantages of Reno5 A
The OPPO Reno5 A is a monaural speaker, so the sound is pretty poor . Even compared to a smartphone with stereo speakers on hand, there is a considerable difference in volume, resolution, and power. No other complaints given the price range.
Overall review
The summary of OPPO Reno5 A is as follows.
- Equipped with Snapdragon 765G. Comfortable if the game is not too heavy
- Considering the price, camera performance is sufficient
- Battery life is excellent. charging speed is not fast
- Rear fingerprint sensor in an easy-to-release position
- A feeling of size to come nicely. Weight is just right
- Supports dual SIM + eSIM
- FeliCa and dustproof and waterproof are well suppressed
The OPPO Reno5 A has almost no flaws, and the monaural speaker is a bit disappointing. In the past, I had an image that the ColorOS installed in OPPO smartphones was difficult to use. However, when I actually used the latest version for about a week, the peculiarity became milder than before, and the subtle image I had so far was wiped out.
You can buy it by changing the model at Y!mobile, or if you can buy it for$142 at the time of the OCN Mobile ONE smartphone set sale, so it's no longer an enemy (OCN Mobile ONE is currently discontinued). If you are interested, please check it out.
